What does a flashing opener light mean?

LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers report faults by flashing the up and down arrows, a single LED or the light bulb a set number of times. Most codes trace back to one of four things: the photo-eyes, a wire, the door being too hard to move, or the motor and its circuit board. Your model's manual lists the exact meaning of each code.

If your LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener is blinking at you, it is trying to tell you something. These two brands come from the same manufacturer, and many of their openers report problems with a pattern of flashes. Here is how to read it and what to do next.

Find your model first

Look for a label on the motor unit, usually on the back or side. It lists the model number. The code chart for your exact model is in the owner's manual and on the manufacturer's support site. Codes differ between product lines, so match the model before drawing conclusions.

Two ways openers show codes

Newer units often have an up arrow and a down arrow on the motor housing. During a fault, each arrow flashes a number of times in turn. Note how many times the up arrow blinks, then the down arrow. Together they form the code.

Older units usually blink a single LED near the learn button, or flash the opener's light bulb. Count the blinks. That number is the code.

What the codes are about

Codes generally fall into a few families.

The first and most common is the safety sensor family. These point to sensors that are blocked, misaligned or have damaged wiring. In Fairfax, humid mornings can fog the lenses and trigger these. Many units also blink the main light a few times when the photo-eyes have sent the door back up.

The second family covers wiring problems with the wall control or sensor wires, such as a short or a break.

The third covers travel and force. These appear when the door is harder to move than the opener expects. Common causes are a worn or broken spring, a door frozen to the floor after an ice storm, or a door rubbing on a bent track.

The last family covers the motor and the logic board. These usually need a technician.

What you can safely try

Wipe both sensor lenses with a dry cloth. Make sure both sensor lights are steady and adjust a bracket gently if one is blinking. Check that nothing is in the door's path. Look along the wall for damaged wires. Disconnect the opener and raise the door yourself. If it feels heavy or will not stay halfway up, a spring is the likely cause, and the opener is only reporting it.

When to call

Codes about the motor, the circuit board or force, or a door that is a dead weight by hand, are the point to phone (571) 736-2137. Expect $135 to $260 for diagnosing the opener and making a small fix, or $280 to $505 to swap in a new chain or belt unit, going by our posted prices.
